About Our Elementary Science Curriculum
Science 21
Mamaroneck uses the Science 21 curriculum, which is a regionally developed curriculum in partnership with Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES. This science program is designed to have students engage in the practices and core ideas of science and engineering to interact with the natural and designed world around them. Students will use concepts that cut across several disciplines as a lens to make meaning of natural phenomena they observe.
This curriculum has a strong emphasis on having students discover how the world around them works through the 5E inquiry model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate and Evaluate). The curriculum is supported with a kit program that helps children build, plan, investigate, question, analyze and communicate their understanding of the natural and designed worlds.
Students are given an opportunity to communicate their scientific understanding by applying skills learned in ELA and Math. They will also learn how to communicate scientific understanding.
Scope and Sequence for Science 21 Units
Science 21 has developed new curriculum for the updated New York State K-12 Science Learning Standards.
The Mamaroneck School District is currently implementing Science 21 in Grade K through Grade 4, and is preparing to implement Science 21 in Grade 5 in the upcoming school year.
