The art experience provides elementary students with an opportunity to explore the artistic process through a variety of media which motivates creative thinking.

The needs of children determine the teacher's role in the art activity. In grades K-5, students' stages of ability often overlap. The art room is the place where children explore both new and familiar media, learn to make connections between materials and ideas, investigate self-expression, and incorporate representation, fantasy and imagination within the study and creation of art.

Art making provides children in all grades with the capacity to inspire, problem solve and innovate creating numerous opportunities for learning, teaching, collaboration and presentation amongst all the students. On the elementary level, the art experience is rich in skills, concepts, techniques, styles, traditions and approaches where the unimagined is imagined.
