Universal Pre-K Registration
The Mamaroneck UFSD offers a Universal Pre-K program available to all. Full day and half day programming are available. To be eligible for the 2025-2026 school year program, the parent/guardian and child must reside in the Mamaroneck Union Free School District and the child must turn 4 years of age in 2025. UPK applications for the 2025-2026 school year will be accepted from February 3, 2025 to March 31, 2025. If more applications are received than the available spots, a lottery will be conducted in mid-April. Applications submitted after April 1, 2025 will be placed on a waiting list and offered spaces as they become available.
The UPK program is run by Healthy Kids Programs at Central Elementary School and aligns with the school district calendar. Additionally, Healthy Kids Programs operates before and after school care; click this link for information on how to register.

Registration Process
UPK applications for the 2025-2026 school year will be accepted from February 3, 2025 to March 31, 2025. All applications received after April 1, 2025 will be added to the waitlist.
The 2024-2025 deadline for registering for UPK has passed. We will add your child's name to the waitlist and let you know if/when a spot becomes available once you complete the online questionnaire (Step 1).

PLEASE BE ADVISED that in order for your child/children to attend the Mamaroneck School District, you must be a resident of the School District. Section 210.45 of the Penal Law of the State of New York prohibits the making of a false written statement. Therefore, your statements contained in your registration application must be true and accurate. If the School District determines at any time that you are not a resident of the School District, your child/children will be excluded from the School District. Further, you will be liable to the School District for payment of tuition from their date of enrollment through their date of exclusion, as well as the costs of collection.
UPK Frequently Asked Questions
What is Universal Prekindergarten(UPK)?
In New York State, UPK is a State and federally funded prekindergarten program offered to families free of charge. The only eligibility requirement for UPK in New York State is a child's residency and age. UPK entry is based on a lottery system and not all families who register are guaranteed a spot.
Is the UPK program free?
Yes. The cost of tuition for those students selected is paid for by the grants. There are no fees paid by the family or the district for up to 2 ½ hours per day/five days a week for the half-day program, up to 6 hours per day/five days a week for the full-day program and for 6+ hours per day/five days a week for the expanded-day program.
What is taught in the program?
All UPK providers that are contracted by the district must follow the New York State Prekindergarten Learning Standards and utilize the Teaching Strategies Creative Curriculum.
How long is the program?
All three UPK programs operate Monday through Friday, for 180 days (as per the district calendar). The half-day instructional program is 2 ½ hours per day. The full-day instructional program is 6 hours per day.
Is transportation available?
No. Families must provide transportation for their child. It is expected that students will be dropped off and picked up at the appointed starting and ending times for their particular class. A shuttle bus will run from Mamaroneck Avenue School to Central daily.
Is lunch provided in the full-day program?
Students in the full-day program are able to participate in the lunch program daily. Students may purchase lunch or receive free lunch if eligible. Students may also bring lunch to school with them each day.
Are there class size limits for UPK?
The maximum UPK class size is 18 students. Classes of 18 require one teacher and one teacher’s aide.
How many seats are available?
The number of classes varies year to year based on available space. Currently there are four classes, two full day classes and two half day classes, each with 18 students.
How many applications does the district typically receive?
The number varies and the district continues to receive applications throughout the school year. There are typically more applications than seats available. However, the waitlist is active and seats do become available throughout the summer and school year.
If I hand in my application right away, does that improve my child’s chances of being selected?
No. All completed, eligible applications will be included in the rubric/ lottery selection process. It is best to wait to hand in your application until you have completed all the applicable forms in the application and have all of your documentation to submit with your application. Submitting documentation after handing in your application makes it more difficult for the Registration Department to process your application.
How is the UPK Lottery Conducted?
If there are more applicants for the UPK program than seats available, a lottery will be conducted in the Family Information Center at Mamaroneck High School. All applicants will be randomly assigned a number using computer software, and then ranked based on the random number. In numerical order, applicants will be awarded their first choice of either the full day or half day program. If their first choice is no longer available, applicants will be awarded their second choice. Once all seats are taken, applicants will be assigned to a waiting list in ranked order, and will be offered any available seats as they become available.
Can all district 4-year-olds attend?
No. The amount of funding the New York State Education Department allocates for these grants will determine how many students can be served. Typically, every year there are more applicants than the number of available spots, therefore, a rubric/lottery selection process is used to determine who will participate. All students who are not selected during the rubric/lottery will be placed on a waiting list. If any vacancies occur during the year, they will be filled until the waiting list has been exhausted.
How will I know if my child has been chosen?
The rubric/lottery selection usually takes place mid-April to determine which students will start the program in September. Healthy Kids Programs will email ALL applicants as soon as possible after the rubric/lottery selection to notify students if they were selected or placed on the waiting list. You will be notified via email and asked to confirm receipt of the email notification. If we do not receive confirmation from you that you received the email, we will then attempt to reach you by phone and finally, if necessary, by a letter mailed to your home address.
How does the waiting list work?
If for any reason, a child drops out of the UPK program, the next family on the waiting list will be offered the vacant spot. If the family declines the vacancy for any reason, they will be removed from the waiting list and no longer eligible to participate in the UPK program.
