Annual FERPA School Notice regarding Student Records and Information

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age ("eligible student") certain rights with respect to the student's education records. It covers the following:

Release of Directory Information

1. Please be advised that the School District designates the following items as Directory Information, and may disclose any of these items without prior written consent, unless notified to the contrary, in writing, to the Superintendent of Schools, by the parent/guardian or eligible student by Friday, September 8, 2023: Student's name, address, home telephone number, cell phone number, date and place of birth, major course of study, participation in school activities or sports, weight and height if a member of an athletic team, dates of attendance, degrees and awards received, most recent school attendance, photographs and e-mail address. Parents may also complete an OPT OUT form here if they wish to withhold their consent for the release of their child's directory information. The following additional information will only be provided to the PTA and other school-related organizations: the parent/guardian name, student/parent/guardian address, e-mail address, home telephone number, and cell phone number. The PTAs publish a “student directory" for each school building which contains the student and parent names, addresses, and telephone numbers, grade levels, and home room of each student enrolled in the District. Such directories shall be used solely by students, parents, and District employees. Directories shall not be given to anyone outside the District or be used for promotion of any activities unrelated to the District. Please advise the Superintendent of Schools in writing by September 8, 2023, if you do not wish your child's information to be included in the student directory.

2. The right to inspect and review the student's education records within 45 days of the day the school receives a request for access in writing to the  Superintendent of Schools.

3. The right to request the amendment of the student's education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate or misleading.

4. All student education records are confidential and may not be released or made available to persons other than parent(s) or guardian(s) or students  without the written consent of such parent(s) or guardian(s} or student. FERPA authorizes the disclosure of personal information without consent in limited circumstances, such as criminal investigations.

5. Parents have the opportunity to prohibit their child's participation in any survey that reveals personal information or political beliefs. A parent/guardian can also exclude a child from any activities in which information will be gathered for marketing purposes.

6. In accordance with Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), upon request, the Mamaroneck School District must disclose a high school student's name, address and telephone number to military recruiters and institutions of higher learning unless the parent/guardian or student 18 years of age or older prohibits release of this information. If you wish to exercise your option to withhold the release of this information, contact Gina Tarascio at 220-3102.

7. The Board of Education, its officers and employees, shall not discriminate against any individual on the basis of actual or perceived race, color, weight, national origin, ethnic group, religion, religious practice, disability, sex, sexual orientation, gender (including gender identity or expression) or any other characteristic protected by law. This policy of nondiscrimination includes access by students to educational programs, counseling services for students, course offerings, school sponsored activities and student activities. Inquiries regarding this policy may be directed to the Assistant Superintendent for Administration and Personnel, Dr. Claire Reinhard at 914-220-3021.
