Safe Routes to School programs enable community leaders, schools and parents across the United States to improve safety and encourage more children to safely walk and bicycle to school. In the process, programs are working to reduce traffic congestion and improve health and the environment, making communities more livable for everyone.

Formed in 2008, the Larchmont/Mamaroneck Safe Routes to School Committee is comprised of a cross section of community leaders including elected officials, municipal employees, law enforcement, school administrators, PTA representatives and Rye YMCA staff.

The role of the SRTS committee is to ensure that all 5E’s of a successful SRTS program are addressed: to ensure that Education and Encouragement programs take place alongside the Engineering and Enforcement initiatives undertaken by the municipalities. Evaluation of these programs will also be part of the committee’s mandate as a way to demonstrate changes in behavior and attitude.
