(The letter below is directed to Hommocks Middle School parents; however, we are including the entire district in the distribution to keep everyone informed.)
Letter from the Superintendent
November 29, 2020
Dear Hommocks Parents,
Over the past 48 hours, we have learned of multiple new positive Covid-19 cases among Hommocks Middle School staff and students. All staff members and families of students who were exposed to or in direct contact with the affected individuals have been contacted and are aware of the need to quarantine. Due to federal health privacy laws, additional information about these individuals cannot be released.
Currently, more than 20 Hommocks teachers are in quarantine due to exposure, and our ability to ensure adequate daily staffing of in-person instruction has been compromised. Beginning tomorrow, Monday, November 30, all of Hommocks Middle School will transition to full-remote learning through Monday, December 7 or Tuesday, December 8. Hommocks Principal Dr. Al Sackey will communicate further details with middle school parents shortly. We do not take this decision lightly. As we have indicated for the past several months, our goal is to keep schools open for in-person learning; transitioning a whole school to full-remote learning is a last option/decision when we are limited in our ability to maintain adequate staffing levels for in-person learning. Please refer to my letter of Nov. 9, 2020, where I communicated about our process and decisions around managing positive Covid cases.
We have been in close communication and collaboration with the Westchester County Department of Health, and the DOH has been conducting necessary contact tracing. We are following and will continue to follow all DOH protocols.
With Regards,
Dr. Robert I. Shaps
