MAMARONECK, NY, October 7, 2020 -- Mamaroneck School District and the District Equity Team (DET) have planned a series of virtual town hall meetings as a follow-up to last month's Board of Education meeting, when the Equity Team presented its working draft of the Equity in Education Policy and Strategic Plan and provided an overview of multi-year goals attached to key priority areas. The upcoming meetings will cover the Equity Plan in more detail and offer opportunities for community feedback.
Community members attending the virtual meetings, facilitated by DET members, will learn about the plan's SMART Goals and the Year One Action Plan for how goals will be accomplished, including K-12 inclusive and anti-racist curriculum, instruction and assessment initiatives. Opportunity for online written feedback and comments will be provided before and after the scheduled virtual meetings.

A new "Equity Plan" section has been created on the District website, where ongoing information and updates on the Team's work, will be posted. "We are committed to creating a process by which students, parents, staff and community members (regardless of whether or not their schedules permit them to attend the meetings) can learn more about the proposed Equity Plan and provide online feedback and comments in a public space," said Leon Whyte, Hommocks music teacher, who, along with Jenny Rodriguez (MHS Assistant Principal), was appointed last night by the BOE to serve as the District Equity Team's co-coordinator to lead and guide the team along with April Francis. "More details to come, but we hope community members will save the dates, as their input will be valuable moving forward."
Background on the District Equity Team
The District Equity Team (DET) -- originated in September, 2019 -- includes staff from all six Mamaroneck School District buildings, central administration, and community partners with the shared collective commitment to address issues of bias and inequitable outcomes. The Equity Team was designed to create a purposeful mandate for system-wide change and community transformation related to acknowledging and dismantling racism in the schools. The premise of the Team's work has centered on planning for "bold moves" through Gr K-12 anti-racism initiatives during the current 2020-21 school year and beyond.
