LETTER FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT: BACK-T0-SCHOOL 2022 UPDATES

August 31, 2022

Dear MUFSD Community,

I write to you as our district custodial and maintenance staff puts the finishing touches on preparing our school buildings for the opening of school. We are so excited to welcome students and staff on Tuesday, September 6th!

Over the past couple weeks, the New York State Departments of Health and Education (NYDOH/NYSED) – following the recommendations of the CDC –  have revised their COVID-related guidance for schools. The new guidance removes many of the previous requirements that school districts needed to adhere to and enables us to renew our focus on our District goals: Creating the conditions that support student engagement and learning; promoting a positive school climate; encouraging civic participation/ensuring life readiness, and engaging the broader community in the daily life of schools.

Please note that remote instruction will no longer be provided for students who are absent from school due to COVID or any other illness. As always, our faculty will do its best to support students who are unable to attend school and help ensure that students have access to work and learning materials during their absence.

Key COVID Protocol Changes for the 2022-2023 School Year

As per this new State guidance, below is a summary of the adjustments we have made to our Mamaroneck School District protocols.

  • Quarantine is no longer required/recommended for individuals exposed to COVID–19 in the school setting

  • Students and/or staff who test positive for COVID-19 must isolate for five days at home; they may return to school following the five-day quarantine, as long as they are fever free for 24 hours and wear a mask indoors through Day 10

  • Students and/or staff with symptoms of respiratory or gastrointestinal infections are directed to stay home and test. Please notify your school nurse of the results.

* Please reach out to your child’s school nurse or administrator if you have questions or need any further clarification.

Background Info from NY State

As the school year progresses, we remind parents to ensure that family members continue to follow safety and health practices, including staying up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations, remaining home and testing when feeling COVID symptoms. We will continue to monitor our community’s COVID positivity rate and keep you informed of any further changes in local, State and national guidelines that may impact our district.

The past two and a half years brought some of the most challenging moments in the history of public education.  As we look forward to this new school year, I want to once again convey my continued respect and appreciation for your support and partnership.

I wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend.

Respectfully,

Dr. Robert I. Shaps
Superintendent of Schools
