Curriculum and Instruction

To burn always with this hard, gemlike flame is success in life.
Walter Pater

Children flourish when they meet meaningful challenges; receive useful feedback and encouragement; and know that their teachers, family, and community believe in their ability to succeed. The Mamaroneck Public Schools are a vibrant learning environment in which students' interests are sparked, their knowledge kindled, and their skills developed from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12. In district classrooms, studios, labs, on stages and athletic fields, students encounter interesting content and worthwhile challenges. They grapple with ideas and learn to think critically. They experiment; they conduct research and revise thinking in light of new information. They put forth effort; they problem-solve. They create innovative designs. They do all this in safe, stimulating learning environments created by caring, knowledgeable teachers.

Decades of research establish that individual teachers are the single largest factor that adds value to student learning, overshadowing students' previous achievement, class size, and ethnic and socioeconomic status. Research further establishes that certain forms of professional development are particularly effective in promoting the transfer of new concepts and instructional strategies into classroom practice. To fuel student achievement, the district provides a stimulating professional environment with many and varied opportunities for professional learning and growth. Teacher leaders at the elementary, middle, and high school levels including Literacy Design Team members, instructional coaches, department chairs, and curriculum coordinators provide collegial support and professional stimulation. A Professional Enrichment Fund enables teachers to attend out-of-district workshops and conferences. Meetings built into the professional calendar throughout the year provide forums for teachers to develop and share content knowledge and instructional best practices.
