Hommocks Literacy Department

The Hommocks Literacy Department’s work is rooted in a strong foundation of independent reading, encouraging student choice in texts that students can and want to read.

Using both formal and informal assessments, careful matching of students to books, and targeted instruction of reading strategies, teachers guide students as they become more proficient, thoughtful and active readers of a variety of texts.

Students engage in study that includes high volume/high success independent reading, word work, vocabulary and text structure in small groups and 1:1 conferring.

Students learn strategies and use tools to move from a literal to a deeper and more thoughtful understanding of what they read.
