Barry Koski Reading

I am the reading specialist that works with grades 4 & 5. My philosophy is that reading, like any skill, improves with practice and that students will develop an appreciation for reading if they are exposed to a variety of good books they are interested in and can read independently. Students also need explicit teaching of skills and strategies and my focus for instruction with the students I see is to improve their comprehension and fluency.

Although I’m scheduled to work with fourth and fifth graders, being in charge of the Accelerated Reader Program allows me to get to know students from other grades as well. One of the best parts of my job is finding out what books students like and then recommending other titles and authors to them.  They in turn recommend titles and authors to me, which are added to our AR list of titles. Students from all grades are welcome to stop by and borrow books from my office.
