Helping Your Child Get Organized for First Grade
1. make sure your child eats some breakfast before school
2. pack a healthy snack for your child every day
3. make sure your child knows if they are bringing or buying lunch
for the day
4. establish a homework routine
• time for homework
• “quiet” place
• table or desk- it can be your kitchen table
• homework supply box -pencils, erasers, crayons, etc.
5. help your child repack their backpack after doing homework
• put homework back in the take home folder
• put books/guided reading books back in the take home
envelope or plastic baggie
6. put the backpack in the same place every day, ready for the
morning.
7. check your child’s folder each day and take out the notices
8. check your child’s special schedule- library, gym, etc. and
remind them to pack library books (Tuesday.) and wear sneakers
(Mon., Thurs. and Fri.).
9. establish a weeknight bedtime routine – children are able to
concentrate and do their best work when they are well- rested
10. limit the amount of time your child is watching television or
playing video or computer games.
First graders gain confidence and become more independent when
they have established routines. I hope these hints are helpful.
Thank you for your cooperation.
