In order to help students learn with understanding, we have adopted Investigations in Number, Data, and Space (TERC) in grades K-5. These programs, based on research about mathematics education and how children learn, emphasize:

* learning mathematics with understanding by exploring meaningful problems

* developing strategies for solving problems rather than memorizing procedures

* choosing from a variety of materials and tools to solve problems

* expressing mathematical thinking through drawing, writing and talking

* working together to solve problems.
