About the Board
Board members also serve as liaisons to community and districtwide committees and to each municipality. How are Board members elected? Local citizens are elected at-large for three-year terms in the districtwide school election in May. There are 7 Board members and they each represent the entire community. Some candidates are endorsed by a citizens’ committee (the Selection Committee); others run as independents. How much are Board members paid? Nothing! They are volunteers and receive no compensation. The Formal Meeting The Board's official business meeting is usually held at 7:30 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. Residents are welcome to address the Board at this meeting. If you wish to speak, sign up on the blue sheet outside. These meetings are usually televised on LMC-TV, channel 75 or 76.Study Sessions These are working sessions held on the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. The Board discusses issues and hears from teachers, students and program, department and committee heads. The Board President will usually allow questions or comments after reports of Study Sessions on the topic of that Study Session.Executive Sessions By law, confidential discussions are held concerning personnel, negotiations and sale or acquisition of property. No action may be taken until the formal meeting.Board Office Hours Two or three Board members are available before Board meetings by appointment to hear suggestions or concerns from individuals. Please call the District Clerk at 220-3007 to make an appointment.Where? The board meets in Mamaroneck High School. Study sessions are in the new library classroom and monthly meetings are in the new tiered classroom. **** We welcome all members of the Community to our meetings and thank you for your assistance in conducting orderly and timely sessions. We appreciate your presence as evidence of your interest in providing an excellent public education to all the children in our community **** Copies of the agenda are available at each meeting. Information also can be obtained the day before a meeting by calling the District Clerk, 220-3007. In order to make decisions at a meeting, Board members receive information on agenda items well in advance. The Board usually will not discuss items not on the agenda. If you speak at a Board meeting... Please step up to the microphone, state your name and address for the record, and direct your remarks to the president, not to the audience. We ask that you limit your remarks. (When many people wish to speak, a time limit may be imposed.) A Board meeting is never the place to discuss personnel issues. What if I have a special concern? If your concern relates to your childs classroom, begin by talking with the teacher. If not resolved there, contact the principal, counselor or psychologist. Finally, contact the superintendent. If your concern is still not resolved, you may bring the matter before the Board, either by writing or calling a Board member, or during Board office hours. Remember, though, that Board members make decisions based on what is best for all the children and citizens in the district, and for the total educational program in the schools.
