Overview of Our Classrooms by Grade Level
Welcome to kindergarten! This overview has been designed to give you more specific information about kindergarten, and answer any questions you and your child may have about what to expect in the upcoming year. Please refer to the Handbook Section for a general overview of Chatsworth programs, policies and guidelines. All kindergarten children attend school five mornings and three afternoons a week. During the first three weeks of school, all kindergarten children attend school in the morning only. These afternoons have been reserved for in-take conferences with parents. (See Conferences for more detail.) When full days begin, your child will be assigned to a Monday and Tuesday afternoon group, or to a Thursday and Friday afternoon group. Students in both groups attend school on Wednesday afternoons until dismissal at 2:25 p.m. Children are allowed to enter school after the first bell rings at: 8:40 a.m. Children should be in the classroom before the second bell at: 8:45 a.m. Dismissal for kindergarten children is 5 minutes before the rest of the school. The teacher or teacher aide waits with the children outside of the building until a parent or caregiver picks up each child. It is important that whoever is picking up your child be on time. If no one picks up the child, the child is taken to the office where a parent will be notified. Morning Dismissal 11:55 a.m. Afternoon Dismissal (M,T,Th,Fr) 2:55 p.m. Wednesday afternoon Dismissal (all students) 2:25 p.m. Each kindergarten class attends the following "specials" every week. Children leave their classroom and attend the special in its own instructional space (i.e. gym, etc.)
Welcome to the 1st grade! This overview has been designed to give you more specific information on changes that you and your child will experience in the upcoming year. All 1st grade children attend school (morning and afternoon) five days a week. Children are dismissed from school by the classroom teacher who waits to make sure they are picked up by a parent or caregiver. If no one picks up the child, the child is taken to the office and a parent will be notified. Each 1st grade class attends the following "specials" every week. Children leave their classroom and attend the special in its own instructional space (i.e. art room, music room, etc.): Each classroom is equipped with at least one computer that has internet and e-mail access. Age appropriate software is also available in each classroom. In addition, computers are located in the library and computer lab. Welcome to the 2nd grade! Each 2nd grade class attends the following "specials" every week. Each 3rd grade class attends the following "specials" every week. Children leave their classroom and attend the special in its own instructional space (i.e. artroom, music room, etc.): In the 3rd grade, two sessions of health education are held with the focus on good touch/bad touch. A note from the health teacher will be sent home before the first session begins. Welcome to the 4th Grade! This overview has been designed to give you more specific information on changes that you and your child will experience in the upcoming year. Each 4th grade class attends the following "specials" every week. Children leave their classroom and attend the special in its own instructional space (i.e. artroom, music room, gym, etc.): All interested 4th graders can participate in the string or band program. They have group rehearsals 1 morning a week before school (8AM) and small group lessons 1 day a week. The students in orchestra and band perform in school concerts during the year. In the 4th grade, two sessions of health education are held with the focus on good touch/bad touch. A note from the health teacher will be sent home before the first session begins. Mrs. Esposito (6ME) welcomes interested 4th graders to participate in a geography program that she offers on Tuesday mornings at 8:00 a.m. This is a yearlong program, exposing the children to some of the realities of life for handicapped individuals. The program relies on the participation of parent volunteers and is coordinated by a district consultant. Welcome to the 5th Grade! This overview has been designed to give you more specific information on changes that you and your child will experience in the upcoming year. This year some classes may change classrooms for a particular subject and/or a particular project. This will be explained in greater detail at Back to School Night by your child's teacher. Children in the 5th grade attend "specials" in the following areas: Children in the 5th grade are assigned small lockers with combination locks to store their gym clothes. They change in single sex locker rooms before Physical Education class. They are asked to bring home their gym clothes once a month. Please make sure gym clothes are labeled with your child's name. This program begins in the second half of the 5th grade and is taught by a Health teacher. In 5th grade, the emphasis is on human development and growth. A parent meeting is held prior to the beginning of instruction to educate parents about the program and answer any questions they may have. A letter will be sent home informing parents of the meeting. All interested 5th graders can participate in the string or band program. They have group rehearsals 1 morning a week before school (8AM) and small group lessons 1 day a week. The students in orchestra and band perform in school concerts during the year. All 5th graders participate in the 5th grade choir during the school year. D.A.R.E. PROGRAM (DRUG ABUSE RESISTANCE EDUCATION) All 5th graders participate in the D.A.R.E. program, which is taught and coordinated by the Larchmont Police. Children meet once a week for a total of 17 hours during school hours. In the spring, there is a D.A.R.E. graduation to which parents are invited. Mrs. Esposito (6ME) welcomes interested 5th graders to participate in a geography program that she offers on Tuesday mornings at 8:00 a.m. Welcome to the 6th Grade your child's last year at Chatsworth! This overview has been designed to give you more specific information on changes that you and your child will experience in the upcoming year. Children in the 6th grade are assigned a homeroom and change classes and teachers for Math, Science, History, Geography and English Language Arts. Children in the 6th grade attend "specials" in the following areas: Children in the 6th grade are assigned small lockers with combination locks to store their gym clothes. They change in single sex locker rooms before Physical Education class. They are asked to bring home their gym clothes once a month. Please make sure gym clothes are labeled with your child's name. The 6th grade health education program is a continuation from 5th grade. In 6th grade, the emphasis of the program is on sexual identity, reproduction and behavioral responsibility. A parent meeting is held with the Health teacher to discuss the curriculum and any questions that parents may have. A letter is sent home informing parents of the meeting. All interested 6th graders can participate in the string or band program. They have group rehearsals 1 morning a week before school (8AM) and small group lessons 1 day a week. The students in orchestra and band perform in school concerts during the year. All interested 6th graders can participate in an optional 6th grade vocal ensemble, which meets at lunchtime once a week. |
